Peter G. Schouten

    Peter G. Schouten, 78, of Sioux Center died, Monday November 23, 2009 at the Sioux Center Community Hospital.


    A memorial service will be held Friday at 11:00AM at the Christian Reformed Church of Ireton with Rev. Rich Kooistra officiating.  Interment will be held prior to the memorial service in Pleasant Hill Cemetery of Ireton.


    A family prayer service will be held Friday at 10:00AM at the Christian Reformed Church of Ireton.


    Visitation will be held Thursday from 4-8PM with the family present from 4-6PM at the Memorial Funeral Home of Sioux Center.


    Peter Gerrit Schouten was born on August 22, 1931, near Hawarden, Iowa, the son of Neal and Clara (Boerma) Schouten. He was raised by Hawarden, where he graduated from Hawarden High School in 1949.


    Pete served in the United States Army from 1953 through 1954 where he served during the Korean War and was stationed near Seoul.   One month after returning from service he was united in marriage to Christine Broek on January 12, 1955 at Sioux Center, IA.  Pete and Chris farmed several years south of Hawarden and then moved to a farm by Ireton, IA.  In 2004 they retired to Sioux Center, IA.  Pete served as a deacon in his church and was a Board member of the Ireton Christian School.


    Pete was a lifetime farmer, avid fisherman and devoted Minnesota Twins fan.  He was a dedicated-loving husband to his wife and a wonderful role model for his children and grandchildren.  His hobbies included playing pool at the All Seasons Center with friends, attending Dordt athletic events and the events of his grandchildren. 


    Survivors include his wife of more than fifty-four years; three children and their spouses, Sandi and Warren Vonk of Sioux Center, Shari and Brent Fedders of Boyden and Jeff and Liza Schouten of Orange City; nine grandchildren, Tabby, Britney, Austin, and Anna Vonk; Zach and Jonah Fedders; Ryer, Tanner and Summer Schouten; three step grandchildren, Jenn and Terry VandeVegte, Pete and Jaimee Vonk, and Karen Vonk; and 5 step great-grand children.  He is survived by 4 sister-in-laws, Joyce Schouten of Hawarden, Cora Broek & Berdie Broek of Sioux Center, and Gert Broek of Sioux Falls, SD; two brother-in-laws, John Van Beek of Orange City; and Gaynor Te Grotenhuis of Sioux Center and numerous nieces and nephews.


    In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Gerrit G. Schouten and an infant brother Calvin; brothers & sisters-in-laws Dave & Cornelia Broek, Arend Broek, Bill & Margaret De Koter, Jim & Nell Franken, Mathilda Van Beek, Clarence & Bertha Klein, Bill & Ina Broek, Cornie Broek, John Broek, and Elsie Te Grotenhuis.


    He will be greatly missed by his family, nieces & nephews, and many friends.
