LaRue Van Muyden, age 70, of Sioux Center, IA, died Wednesday, April 25, 2018 at his home in Sioux Center, following a courageous battle with cancer.
Memorial service will be 2:00 PM Saturday, April 28th at Central Reformed Church in Sioux Center with Rev. Van Rathbun officiating. Prayer service will take place at 1:00 PM at Central Reformed Church before burial at Memory Gardens Cemetery in Sioux Center, with military honors by Doornink-Brunsting American Legion Post 199 and VFW Post 6129.
Visitation will be Friday, April 27th from 4:00 to 7:00 PM with family present from 5:00 to 7:00 PM at Central Reformed Church in Sioux Center.
Memorials may be directed to Sioux Center Health Hospice and Home Care and or American Cancer Society.
Larry LaRue Van Muyden was born on June 27, 1947 in Sioux Center, IA, the son of Marvin and Winefred (DeVries) Van Muyden. He grew up in Sioux Center and later graduated from the Sioux Center High School. Following his graduation, LaRue worked for Moerman Painting. He enlisted in the U.S. Army and served in Korea during the Vietnam conflict from 1967 to 1969. On May 24, 1978, LaRue was united in marriage to Donna Boscaljon at the Central Reformed Church in Sioux Center. The couple made their home in Sioux Center and to this union three children were born; Daniel, Thomas, and Patrick. LaRue continued working for Moerman Painting after his discharge from the army. In 1978 he started his own painting business “Van Muyden Painting”. In 1981, he added a partner and their business was known as “Van Muyden Mulder Painting” and they worked together until 2013.
LaRue grew up in the First Reformed Church in Sioux Center and joined Central Reformed Church after he was married. He was active in Central Reformed as deacon, elder and Sunday school teacher. He also served as an “EMT” for nineteen years.
He was an avid reader, liked to fish and hunt. He liked to fish on the river and at Women Lake with his boys. He also was an excellent woodworker. He spent lots of hours in his studio (garage) working on different projects. As a painter he was known for excellent workmanship. Nothing could be sanded to much. He took his time and did it right.
LaRue is survived by his wife of almost forty years, Donna Van Muyden; two children: Thomas Peter Van Muyden of Alcester, SD and fiancé Ali McCormick of Sioux Falls,SD, and Tom’s daughters Eliza June Van Muyden and Elsie River Van Muyden of Alcester,SD and Patrick William and his wife Sarah (Rathbun) Van Muyden of Harrisburg, SD; sister, Zell Rae DeBruin of Hull, IA; two sisters-in-law: Sue (Ron) Doppenberg of Sioux Center, IA and Melanie Boscaljon of Raleigh, NC; and a very special friend and neighbor, Ruthann Haverhals of Sioux Center, IA; and nieces, nephews and other extended family.
He was preceded in death by an infant son, Daniel Lee; his parents, Marvin and Winefred Van Muyden; brother, Ward Van Muyden; and father and mother-in-law, Donald and Lena Boscaljon.
