John Van Der Wilt, 90 of Middleburg, IA passed away Thursday, November 2, 2017 at the Senior Care Center in Sheldon, IA.
Funeral service will be 11:30 AM Monday, November 6, 2017 at Middleburg Free Grace Reformed Church with Pastor Greg Jorgensen officiating.
Visitation will be Sunday, November 5th from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM with family present at the Free Grace Reformed Church in Middleburg, IA
In lieu of flowers, the family wishes memorials to be directed at a later date.
John Theodore Van Der Wilt was born May 12, 1927 near Sioux Center, IA the son of Anthony and Grace (Roetman) Van Der Wilt. He was raised near Sioux Center and graduated from Sioux Center High School. John entered the United States Army in 1950 and served until 1952. On November 10, 1951 he was united in marriage to Yetty In’t Veld in Hasbrouck Heights, New Jersey. The couple first made their home in Texas while John finished his military service. From 1955 until 1960 they lived in Bellflower, CA. In 1960 the family moved to Middleburg, IA to the Van Der Wilt family farm where they lived until 1988. In 1988 they moved to Spirit Lake until Yetty’s passing in 2010. He then moved west to live near family until 2014 when he moved back to Sioux Center.
John and Yetty visited their sons in several places overseas while those men served their country in the military. In 2010, John lost his precious wife of 58 years.
He enjoyed spending time with his family, fishing, camping, tinkering in his garage, woodworking and traveling.
He is survived by his children: six sons, Larry (Joyce) Vander Wilt of Orange City, IA, Jim (Margene) Vander Wilt of Littleton, CO, Denny (Randi) Vander Wilt of Sioux Falls, SD, A.J. Vander Wilt of Montrose, CO, Bruce Vander Wilt of Garretson, SD, Brian (Cindy) Vander Wilt of Chattanooga, TN, and daughter, Mary (John) De Boer of Archer, IA.; 16 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; 2 great great-grandchildren; sister, Mae De Gooyer of Sioux Center, IA; sisters-in-law, Betty Burggraaff of Sheldon, IA and Martha Jones of Spirit Lake, IA; nieces, nephews and other extended family members.
John was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Yetty; sister, Sophie (Ed) DeJongh; brothers-in-law, Adrian (Fran) In’t Veld, Marv In’t Veld, and Arie Burggraaff.
