Dorothy Voortman, 79, of Sioux Center, IA died Monday, June 9, 2014, at Sioux Center Health of Sioux Center. A visitation will be held on Wednesday from 4-8PM, with the family present from 6:30-8PM at the Memorial Funeral Home of Sioux Center. A prayer service for family and friends will be held on Thursday at 2:00PM at the First Christian Reformed Church of Sioux Center. Interment will follow the prayer service in Memory Gardens Cemetery of Sioux Center. A memorial service will be held on Thursday at 3:00PM at the First Christian Reformed Church with Rev. Carl Klompien officiating. In lieu of flowers or gift items, the Voortman family prefers memorials to Sioux Center Christian School Foundation. Dorothy (Brands) Voortman was born July 9, 1934 in Doon, Iowa to Henry and Jennie (Brouwer) Brands. Dorothy was raised in the Rock Valley and Inwood, Iowa area. She attended Rock Valley Christian School and after moving to Inwood attended a nearby country school through the eighth grade. Dorothy was united in marriage to Donald Voortman on June 5, 1958 in Sioux Center, Iowa. The couple made their home in Sioux Center where they raised their two daughters. Donald preceded Dorothy in death on September 26, 1987. Dorothy was employed at Casey's Bakery, Sioux Center Community Hospital for 17 years and Premier Communications for 37 years. Dorothy was an active member of the First Christian Reformed Church of Sioux Center where she served as a Pastoral Assistant; she also was a longtime participate in Gleaners Forum. In her spare time, she enjoyed gardening and spending time with her family and grandchildren. Survivors include her two daughters and sons-in-law: Darla and Benton Siemonsma of Sioux Center and their children: Jennifer and Jonathan, Debbie and Bryan Gabel of Sioux Falls, SD and their children: Matthew, Heather, Joshua and Lucas. Dorothy is also survived by four sisters and brothers-in-law: Jennie and Joe Dragstra of Edgerton, MN, Marian and Gerald Wallenburg of Inwood, Arlene and Cornie Bakker of Sioux Falls, SD, Carol and Bill Bouwman of Rock Valley; two sisters: Nelma Byker of Hawarden, Gertrude Kruid of Hawarden; brother and sister-in-law, Gerald and Lavina Brands of Inwood along with her numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband, Dorothy was preceded in death by her infant daughter, Denise Ranae Voortman; an infant grandson, Nicholas Gabel; her parents; twin infant brothers; sister and brother-in-law, Rena and Arie Intveld and brothers-in-law: Marion Byker and Jim Kruid.
