He then began farming with his father milking cows, raising pigs, cattle and chickens, as well as corn, oats and soybeans. Bill married Verna G. Hogan, January 9, 1945 and lived on the farm west of Sioux Center until 1988. Bill and Verna raised four boys, Willis, Verlyn, Allan and Mark. There were many memorable events that took place on the farm with relatives and friends. It was the gathering place for good food, fun, riding horses and pigs as well as an occasional softball game on the yard and maybe throwing a few horseshoes. Memories of the farm are deeply embedded with everyone. The events on the farm included helping neighbors and relatives during difficult times. This benevolence was given in many different forms, but always with unselfish love and caring. He had a special influence in the lives of his nieces, nephews and grandchildren. Bill enjoyed practical jokes, lively conversations, playing with grandchildren and sharing memories. During his later years of life he enjoyed woodworking, canning, baking banana bread, and an occasional rowdy game of golf with his sons. Bill was a lifetime member of the First Reformed Church of Sioux Center. He was also a member of the Associated Milk Producers Incorporated serving on local, regional and national boards. Bill is survived by four sons and daughters-in-law: Willis and Cathy of Cedar Rapids, IA; Verlyn and Cheryl of Sioux Center, IA; Allan and Anne of Overland Park, KS; Mark and Kathy of Sioux Center, IA along with nine grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild. Bill has one brother and sister-in-law, Ray and Carol Sneller of Parker, SD and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Verna of 57 years; one grandson, Stephen Sneller; five sisters and brothers-in-law: Dena & Neal Van Roekel; Jennie & Orin Franke; Bertha & William Cleveringa; Gertrude & John Statema; Grace & Jim De Boer; one sister, Agnes Sneller; three brothers and sisters-in-law: Edd & Luwina Sneller; Gerrit & Grace Sneller; Henry & Tena Sneller; one sister, Jennie Sneller who died at birth.
