Edwin Lee Nieuwsma, the son of William and Bertha (Droog) Nieuwsma, was born on July 12, 1947 in Linton, ND. He was raised on the family farm near Hull, ND. He started his education at country school then went on to graduate high school from Strasburg, ND. On November 26, 1965, he married Lorraine Van Beek, his high school sweetheart, at the Hull Christian Reformed Church in Hull, ND. They began their married life in Bismarck, ND later moving to a farm near Pollock, SD and eventually settled in Sioux Center, IA where they would raise their family. Ed was a member of Faith Christian Reformed Church in Sioux Center. While working as a hog buyer for SIG International he cherished the friendships that were established with the employees and producers over the past eleven years. If you didn't see Ed with Lorraine serving prime rib, they were driving down the road to one of their grandchildren's activities. Family and faith were most important to Ed. He believed his grandchildren were special blessings from God. Survivors include his devoted and loving wife of 44 years; his two sons and daughter and their families: Kevin and Gail Nieuwsma of Lakeville, MN and their children Kori and Jordan; Mike and Sheresa Nieuwsma of Prior Lake, MN and their children Megan and Andrew; Trisha and Kris Vonk of Sioux City, IA and their children Bailey and Braden. Also left to cherish Ed's memory is his father of Strasburg, ND; two brothers: Franklin and Gracie Nieuwsma of Hull, ND and Willard Nieuwsma of Pollock, SD; five sisters: Gladys and Lowell Seymour of Pollock, SD; Helen Huizenga of Edmonds, WA; Carol and Herb Neukircher of Mandan, ND; LaVonne and Jim Rossow of Buffalo, WY; and Vivian and Curt Vander Vorst of Hull, ND. Also by marriage his mother-in-law, Gerturde Nieuwsma of Bismarck, ND; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Sturg and Gail Van Vugt of Sioux Center, IA; Cil Van Beek of Strasburg, ND; Gerry and Denise Van Beek of Bismarck, ND and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his mother; brothers-in-law, Bob Huizenga, Bob Crawford, Harlan Dornbush and Denny Van Beek; sister-in-law, Sylvia Nieuwsma; niece, Natalie Nieuwsma; step father-in-law, Edwin Nieuwsma and Lorraine's father, Gerald Van Beek. Online Condolences Ruth Kocisko Sioux Center Relationship: church member Lorraine & family, So sorry about your loss. May God comfort you in this difficult time. The plans we make with our spouses(growing old together) don't always work out. But God can give you other things to do to keep you busy and give you a sense of fulfillment and His purpose. I know this myself. Draw near to him and he will draw near and comfort you. He will cover you with His wings. Sent: 4/18/2010 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Robbie Jungers Boyden Relationship: Friend Lorraine & family, Tony & I just heard yesterday of Ed's passing. It breaks our hearts tht our loss is heaven's gain. We certainly will miss him at the prime rib supper and of course giving us a shout from a cross the road from SIG while we filled our vehicles up at the Coop in Boyden. Alot of times he'd give a wave or walk over & have that chuckle in his voice when he spoke. What a kind, friendly and giving man. Taken too soon... We will keep you in our thoughts & prayers in the days & months ahead. Sincerely, Tony & Robbie Jungers Sent: 4/19/2010 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Phil & Cheryl Schiebout Orange City Relationship: old friend What is my only comfort in life and in death.
