April Ann was born on April 1, 1967, in Phoenix, AZ to Bob and Nancy Harger. Soon after her birth, they moved to Visalia, CA, where she lived most of her life.
Upon graduating from high school, she went to work for Kim and Elsie at Valhalla’s Family Restaurant and Gift Shop in Visalia. This mother-daughter team became much more to her than employers; they were family. She worked for and with them for many years. Valhalla’s is where she met her husband, Bob. April loved working in the hospitality industry. She made many lifelong friends and acquaintances at Valhalla’s.
On June 27, 2009, she was united in marriage to Bob Van Der Schaaf. They made their home in Visalia, CA for many years. In 2018, they moved to Canyon, TX and in 2021 to Sioux Center, Iowa.
In both new locations, she continued working in the restaurant industry where she made many new friends through her employment at The Café Marizon in Amarillo, the Sioux County Cattleman’s and most recently 4 Brothers in Sioux Center. April enjoyed her work, but nothing compared to her love for her husband Bob and their family.
April was a person who lit up the room the moment she walked in. She always had a quick comeback. She was filled with life and light, which reflected deeply her love for Jesus. She was confident in the identity she found in Christ and took every opportunity to share His love with those around her. In her most difficult moments in battling illness, she found great comfort in repeating the name of Jesus. April was a warrior for Him and wanted everyone to know that Jesus never abandoned her through each recurring battle with meningioma brain tumors.
Left to cherish her memories include her husband, Bob of Sioux Center, her son, Brandon and his wife Jessica Kitchen. Grandsons Little Brandon, Easton, Ezra, and Nash. Her beloved father and stepmother, Bob, and Irma (Irmie)Harger. Sisters, Sandy, Tilly-Rae, Rachel and Heidi and brother Rodney Harger. Stepsons and families, Blake/Kristy Van Der Schaaf, Ayden, Taryn, and Tess. Brett and Briana Van Der Schaaf, Colton, and Cayson and forever friends Elsie, Kim, and Veronica.
In addition to her mother, Nancy, April was preceded in death by her two infant sons, Adam and Bobby and her brother Luke.
“So do not fear, for I am with you; I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.” Isaiah 41:10
