Brent Vaas, age 71, of Hull, IA died Wednesday, December 24, 2025, at Pleasant Acres Care Center in Hull, IA.
There will be a Memorial Service held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, December 30, 2025, at The Newkirk Reformed Church in Newkirk, Iowa with Rev. John Benson officiating. A private interment for the family will be held prior to the service in the Newkirk cemetery.
A visitation will be held from 5-7PM on Monday, December 29, 2025, at Memorial Funeral Home in Sioux Center.
The Vaas family prefers memorials be made to the Newkirk Reformed Church building fund.
Brent Eugene Vaas was born June 23, 1954, in Orange City, Iowa, to Earl and Wilma (Van Oort) Vaas. He graduated from Floyd Valley High School in 1972 and then attended the Police Science program at Western Iowa Technical College in Sioux City.
On June 19, 1981, Brent married Glenda Jean Byker at the Hawarden Christian Reformed Church. The couple lived on his parent’s farm near Newkirk until 2014. In 2014 the couple sold the acreage and moved to Hull, Iowa after Brent was diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease.
Over the years, Brent worked as a farmer as well as a part-time jailer at the Sioux County Jail. He also drove a delivery truck for Casey’s Bakery for 10 years.
Brent was a lifelong member of the Newkirk Reformed Church and served as a Deacon as well as various other positions at the church. He enjoyed time with his family including taking his grandkids on Ranger rides and shooting fireworks.
In his free time, Brent enjoyed traveling, watching the Minnesota Twins and Green Bay Packers. He and friends would make an annual trip to a Twins game, the Minnesota State Fair and their annual New Year’s Eve get together. He played for the Newkirk church softball team and was also a member of a bowling team over the years. He found great joy in working with kids as a paraprofessional at the Boyden Hull elementary school.
He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Glenda Vaas of Hull, Iowa and his children:

Brent is also survived by his mother-in-law, Tracy Byker of Sioux Center; three brothers-in-law: Charles Hofland of Hospers, IA, Sylvan and Carol Byker of Sioux Center, Arlin and Laura Byker of Sioux Center; sister-in-law, Irene and Bill Schuiteman of Sioux Center as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Brent was preceded by his parents, Earl and Wilma Vaas; his sister, Anita Hofland; and his father-in-law, Gerrit Byker.
