Bruce Hooyer, 77 of Sioux Center, died Thursday, April 2, 2026, in Sioux Center at the Crown Pointe Care Center.
A funeral service will be held at 10:30 AM on Tuesday, April 7, 2026, at Bethel Christian Reformed Church in Sioux Center, IA, with Rev. John Lee officiating.
Burial will follow in the Memory Gardens Cemetery in Sioux Center, Iowa, with military honors by Doornink-Brunsting American Legion Post No. 199 and VFW Post No. 6129.
Visitation will be held from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Monday, April 6, 2026, with family present at the Memorial Funeral Home in Sioux Center.
Bruce Arlin Hooyer was born on April 14, 1948, in Sioux Center, Iowa, the son of Albert and Florence (Van Donge) Hooyer. He grew up on a farm near Carmel and attended Sioux Center Christian and then Hull Western Christian High School, graduating in 1966. Bruce then enlisted in the Iowa National Guard in September 1966 and was called to active duty in May of 1968 until August of 1969 and was stationed at Fort Carson in Colorado. He served from September 1966 to September 1972.
On May 7, 1968, Bruce was united in marriage to Phyllis Iedema at the Christian Reformed Church in Ocheyedan, Iowa. To this union, four children were born: Jason, Kyle, Lynette, and Michael.
Bruce owned “Kent Feed Store” in Sioux Center for a time and was always involved in the livestock business throughout his life. He enjoyed the outdoors, especially fishing with his children and grandchildren. Bruce never met a stranger and made many cherished friends who will remember him for his sense of humor, infectious laugh, and gift for storytelling.
Left to cherish his memory is his wife of fifty-seven years, Phyllis Hooyer; four children, Jason Hooyer and his children, Kevin (Ceslie) and Lauren; Kyle (Althea) Hooyer and their children, Austin (Megan) and McKenna; Lynette (Bob) Stearns and their children, Rylee and Camden; and Michael (Jacque) Hooyer and their son, Ezra; four great-grandchildren, Harper, Jameson, Braiden, and Dean; five siblings, Helen (Bill) Vanden Top, Anita (Glenn) Van Bruggen, Allen (Bev) Hooyer, Marv Hooyer, and Joel (Irene) Hooyer; sister-in-law, Marla Hooyer; and in-laws, Gert Ommen, Jame (Sherry) Iedema, Gary Iedema, Bob (Jan) Iedema, Karen Iedema, Judy (Dave) Beek, Gerilyn Bootsma, Diane (Sam) Dorhout, Cheryl (Brian) Hoekstra, and Dennis Iedema; nieces, nephews and other extended family.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Albert and Florence Hooyer; father and mother-in-law, Bernard and Ella Iedema; and brother, Terry Hooyer.
