Dennis Van Ommeren

     Dennis Van Ommeren, age 80, of Orange City, Iowa died Sunday, May 8, 2022, at Prairie Ridge Care Center in Orange City, IA. 

     A funeral service will be held at 10:30AM on Thursday, May 12, 2022, at the Maurice Reformed Church in Maurice, Iowa with Rev. Wick Hubers officiating.  Interment will follow the service in Sherman Township Cemetery of Maurice.

      A visitation with the family present will be held from 5-7PM on Wednesday, May 11, 2022, at the Memorial Funeral Home of Sioux Center. 

     Dennis Eugene Van Ommeren was born December 23, 1941, on a farm by Hull, Iowa the son of Peter and Priscilla (VerMeer) Van Ommeren.  Shortly after, his family moved to a farm near Brooten, Minnesota.  In 1945, they returned to Northwest Iowa and moved to a farm by Maurice, Iowa.

     Dennis received his education at the Maurice Public School and was a member of the first graduating class of Maurice-Orange City High School in 1960.  After he graduated, he enjoyed working with his dad on the farm, helping with the planting and the harvesting of the crops.  He also worked at the Maurice Lumber Yard for many years.  He loved to go fishing with family and friends.

     Dennis was a member of the Maurice Reformed Church.  His faith was very important to him, and he read his Bible and talked to Jesus every day.

     He had a passion for Gospel music and enjoyed playing CDs and sharing his music with others.  For a time, he would take music to the nursing home where his mother was staying and play it for the residents there.

     Dennis loved to play scrabble and was always willing to challenge anyone to a good game.  Most often he would win.

     In 2007, Dennis moved to the New Homestead Apartments in Sioux Center, Iowa. He made friends with many of his neighbors and enjoyed visiting with them.  In 2018, he moved to the Hillcrest Care Center in Hawarden, Iowa and in 2021 he moved to Prairie Ridge Care Center in Orange City, Iowa.

     Dennis is survived by two brothers and one sister: Stan and Anna Mae Van Ommeren of Maurice, Norm and Margene Van Ommeren of Orange City, and Ruth and David Heidebrink of Maurice, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

     Dennis was preceded in death by his parents, brother, Don Van Ommeren and sister-in-law, Marjorie Van Ommeren.
