Gertrude Joan Boer was born April 15, 1933 to James and Bertha (Bierma) Geels on a farm southwest of Sioux Center. Gert was the oldest of 8 children. She attended Kindergarten through part of 2nd grade at the country school near their farm. When her family moved to a farm near Ireton, IA, Gert continued her education, graduating from Ireton Christian Grade School. She attended and graduated from Western Christian High School, living with her grandmother in Sioux Center during the week for her freshman and sophomore years. Once bus service included the Ireton area, she was able to live at home as a junior and senior. Gert received her two-year teaching degree from Calvin College in Grand Rapids, MI, which allowed her to teach two years at Ireton Christian Grade School in the lower grades. (Gert is still remembered and referred to as Miss Geels by some of her former students.)
Gert and Harold began dating during her time as a teacher. They were married at Ireton Christian Reformed Church on June 6, 1955, and began their married life living on two different farms near Rock Valley for several years, during which time they attended Calvin Christian Reformed Church. They later moved to a farm near Sioux Center and became faithful members of Bethel Christian Reformed Church through their remaining years.
Gert’s love of music began as a young child, singing her first solo in church at the age of five. She took piano lessons while in grade school, and organ lessons when she was in high school. She was still able to play a pump organ while in her 70’s. Gert was a member of the A Cappella choirs and other singing groups during all her high school and college years. She was able to use these skills through the years in church services, weddings, and funerals. She was a member of the Sioux County Oratorio Chorus, participating in their performances. Some of her favorite performances were singing the Messiah, especially the Hallelujah Chorus. In addition, Gert loved to sing in the church choir, and was blessed to do so for over 50 years.
While at Bethel, Gert was a member of Mary’s Fellowship, Harmony Workers and she and Harold participated in the couple's Bible studies. She also served in the role of coordinating chairman of the work groups at Bethel for close to 30 years. She was a member of the Classy Lassie Red Hat Group, where she enjoyed friendships, trips and tours.
Gert loved attending the many music programs of her children and grandchildren, as well as the many musical recitals, and choir concerts at Dordt College. As much as she enjoyed music, she also loved watching her children and grandchildren participate in various sports. She was a faithful fan at basketball, baseball, softball, soccer, volleyball games, and track meets of her children, grandchildren, as well as other relatives. Her favorite sports to watch were volleyball and basketball. In addition, she enjoyed traveling to see events where her family members were coaching various sports.
Her family remembers Gert opening her home to care for children of relatives and friends. She was an excellent cook, and at times baked pies for the Auto Dine Restaurant. When she wasn’t busy with all of the above listed activities, she loved to shop for clothing and shoes!
Most of all, her family remembers their mom’s unwavering faith and dedication to Christian Education throughout her life.
