Gilbert Schelling, age 91, of Orange City, IA died Saturday, October 19, 2019 at Pleasant Acres Care Center in Hull.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, October 25, 2019 at the Netherlands Reformed Church of Sioux Center, IA with Rev. H. Hofman, officiating. Interment will follow the service in Memory Gardens Cemetery of Sioux Center. There will be a private family prayer service at 9:30 a.m.
Visitation with the family present will be held on Thursday, October 24th from 6:30-8:00 p.m. at the Memorial Funeral Home of Sioux Center.
The Gilbert Schelling family prefer memorials be directed to the Netherlands Reformed Christian School.
Gilbert Schelling was born July 29, 1928 to Rochus and Jennie (Harskamp) Schelling on the family farm in Sioux County, IA. He grew up on the family farm and attended country school. After his education he worked for area farmers as a hired hand.
Gilbert was united in marriage to Wilma Vander Schaaf on January 11, 1950. They made their home on a farm near Hudson, South Dakota before moving to a farm near Sioux Center, Iowa where they started their own dairy and raised their six children. He was a member of the Netherlands Reformed Church in Sioux Center. He enjoyed fishing, making candy and going on bus tours with his wife, Wilma.
He is survived by his children, Shirley (Abe) Den Hoed of Hull, IA, Robert (Sharon) Schelling of Sioux Center, IA, Harlan (Jane) Schelling of Orange City, IA, Lois (Enno) Haan of Sioux Center, IA, Marvin (Kathy) Schelling of Orange City, IA, and Karen (Bud) Kuiken of Hartford, SD; 25 grandchildren; 58 great grandchildren; a brother, John R. (LaVonne) Schelling of Sioux Center, IA; 3 sisters, Henrietta Knibbe of Sioux Center, IA, Jeane Zomer of Rock Valley, IA and Joane Zomer of Sioux Center, IA; and many nieces, nephews and other extended family.
He was preceded in death by his wife Wilma, of 69 years, his parents, Rochus and Jennie Schelling; brother, Cornelius “Case” (Gertrude) Schelling; sisters, Alida (Edward) Ymker and Emma (Gerrit) Roskam; brothers-in-laws, Klaas Knibbe, Cornie Zomer, Herman Zomer; 4 year old brother, Jan, 12 year old brother, John; infant sister, Fredrika; 7 year old brother, William, and an infant child.
