Henry Dokter, age 93, of Sioux Center, Iowa, died Monday, May 10, 2021, at the Royale Meadows Care Center in Sioux Center.
A prayer service will take place at 9:00 a.m. Friday, May 14, 2021, at Bethel Christian Reformed Church in Sioux Center with burial to follow at Memory Gardens Cemetery in Sioux Center.
A memorial service will take place at 10:00 a.m. on Friday at Bethel Christian Reformed Church in Sioux Center with Rev. Jon Lee officiating. A livestream link will be available to view the service at www.mfhonline.com.
Visitation will be Thursday, May 13, 2021, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. with the family present at Bethel Christian Reformed Church in Sioux Center.
The Dokter family requests memorials directed to the Bethel Christian Education Fund.
Memorial Funeral Home of Sioux Center is in charge of services.
Henry John Dokter was born on November 2, 1927 in Hull, Iowa, to Evert and Bertha (Wissink) Dokter. He grew up in Hull, Iowa, and attended Sioux Center High School. On February 21, 1951, Henry was drafted into the United States Army.
On June 5, 1951, Henry was united in marriage to Irene Dykstra at First Reformed Church in Rock Valley, Iowa. Henry and Irene moved to several places during his enlistment, including Virginia and Wisconsin. They made their home in Sioux Center after Henry served two years in the Army. Together they raised five sons and one daughter.
In the past, Henry worked at Standard Oil Gas Station, which expanded into Dokters Farm Service, and owned tent rentals for many years. Later he served as custodian at Bethel Christian Reformed Church for 20 years. He enjoyed camping, fishing, bowling, playing Cribbage with friends, and watching the grandchildren’s sporting events. His family will remember him as a servant and as a hard worker always willing to help others.
Those left to cherish his memory are his four sons and a daughter; 13 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren: Douglas Dean (Romy) Dokter of Blaine, MN, and their family: Daphne and John Bungert and children Walter and Charles; Brittany and Nathan Johnston; Travis and Danielle Dokter and children Isaac and Jacob; Kenneth Alan (Arliss) Dokter of Spirit Lake, IA, and their family: Seth and Allison Dokter and children Jocelyn and Quincy; Matt and Cara Dokter and children Karissa, Mackenzie, Avery and Gavin; Philip Brent (Brenda) Dokter of Sioux Center, IA, and their family: Leslie and Nate Huizenga and children Justin, Ashley and Logan; Rochelle and John Sapp and children Kaedyn, Carter, and Kinsley; daughter-in-law, Karen Dokter of Alexandria, MN, and daughters Anna and Aleah; Dennis John (Joeli) Dokter of Sioux Center, IA and children Caleb and Ellie; Barbara Lynn (Brian) Van Haaften of Sioux Center, IA, and children: Courtney and Jayson. Also left to cherish his memory are his brothers Bernard (Lydia) Dokter of Grand Rapids, MI, and Ed Dokter of Sioux Center, IA; brother-in-law Walter Blom of Rock Valley, IA; sisters-in-law, Adie Dykstra of Rock Valley, IA, and Jane Dykstra of Pond Creek, OK; along with many extended family.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife Irene Dokter; son Eugene Mark Dokter; infant son; sister Evelyn Blom; an infant sister; and several sisters and brothers-in-law.
