Larry Albertus Huygens was born September 11, 1940, in Hospers, IA, the son of James and Jennie (Brink) Huygens. Larry grew up in Hospers, attended school in Hospers, where he was an outstanding basketball player, selected for All State in 1958. After graduation, he attended Northwestern College in Orange City. On July 14, 1962, Larry married Margie Klein, also from Hospers. They moved to Sioux Center where Larry joined his father running Doc's Café on main street. Larry, along with Oots Altena, purchased Doc's in 1976. When the Sioux Center mall was built in 1991, Larry moved his business to the old bowling alley. He and Margie continued to run Doc's until his retirement in 2005. Larry loved anything related to sports, talking with his "regulars" at work, having coffee at McDonald's with his buddies, going to the casino, and spending time with next door neighbors Dave and Shawna Ymker and their kids, Blake and Alivia. He especially loved his role as "adoptive" grandpa to Blake and Alivia. After retirement from Docs, he and Margie started spending winters in Orlando, Florida, where daughter, Robin and son, Shane live. He loved being able to spend time with his children and grandchildren. In July 2022, Larry and Margie celebrated 60 years of marriage.
He is survived by his wife, Margie Huygens of Sioux Center: his children Robin Ortega (Jose) of Orlando, FL, Jami Sue Huygens of Galveston, TX, and Shane Huygens (Margaret) of Orlando, FL. Celebrating his memory are three grandchildren: Bianca Ortega of West Hollywood, CA, Shamar Peters Huygens of Orlando, FL, and Jaden Huygens of Orlando FL. In addition, Larry is survived by his brother, Jimmie Huygens and wife Bonnie, in-laws Paul and Bernice Schwebach, John Luke, Charlotte Watts, Teresa and Larry Gathman, and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his father, James Huygens and mother, Jennie Huygens, sister Betty Mouw and her husband, Roger Mouw, inlaws Delbert and Josephine Dittman, Harold Klein, Marie Luke, Elenor Jungers, Benny Watts, and Wayne and Geraldine Hardin.
