Mayme Walburg

Mayme Walburg, age 99, of Sioux Center, Iowa, died Saturday, April 11, 2026 at Crown Pointe Care Center in Sioux Center.

A funeral service will take place at 1:00 PM, Wednesday, April 15, 2025 at Memorial Funeral Home in Sioux Center, with Reverend Kurt Monroe, officiating.

Visitation will be one hour prior to the service.

Mayme E. Walburg was born October 7, 1926, in Dempster, SD to John and Marie (Poppen) Kruiter. She was named after her grandmother, Mamie Poppen. She grew up in the Dempster/Castlewood area and attended Dempster School until 8th grade.

She met her sweetheart “Bernie” Walburg through a mutual friend who gave her Bernie’s address while he was in the service. They wrote back and forth and when he was out of the army, he proposed. They were married April 14, 1953, at her parents’ home. They made their home on a farm near Clear Lake, SD and raised 3 children, LeRoy, Don, and Loretta (Lori). In 1979, they moved to an acreage north of Orange City, IA. Together they grew a huge garden full of homegrown fruits and vegetables, which Mayme canned and froze. Her specialties were her famous lime pickles and pickled beets, which she shared with family and friends. They also sold their produce at the local farmers markets.

In April 2010, they moved into the New Homestead in Sioux Center, where Mayme met many new friends, whom she thoroughly enjoyed going for walks and playing games together. Bernie passed away April 9, 2013. Later, she moved to Franken Manor and Crown Pointe Care Center. There she loved to read, do sticker books, and especially color many special pages for all to see. She loved balloon volleyball, UNO, and Bingo, until she was unable to participate. She extremely enjoyed visits from her kids and grandkids and soaked up every minute with them. She was a quiet, and very special lady who focused her life on God and her family. Her faith was evident in how she lived her life.

She is survived by her children: son, LeRoy and Jo Walburg of Sioux Center, son, Don and Deane Walburg of Orange City, and daughter, Lori and Stan Oostra of Rock Valley, Grandchildren: Emily & Dustin Shearer (Aubrey & Taylor); Megan & Tim Van Veldhuizen (Faith, Temperance, Treyton, Ray, & Payton); Jesse & Sara Hurt (Haley, Parker, Eli, Eastin, Nora & Nolin); Jacob (Jazlynn, Jaxton, Jayleigh, & Landon); Jason & Mel (Gage); and Jordan Oostra. She is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews whom she dearly loved.

She was preceded in death by her husband and parents; infant son at birth; brothers and sisters-in-law, Ben & Phyllis Kruiter; Paul & Shirley Kruiter; Bernie’s sister and brother-in-law, Jo and Bert Volkers; brothers and sisters-in-law, Ted & Gladys Walburg, Henry & Ady Walburg, Mike & Kaye Walburg, and Ray & Rosie Walburg.
