Peter T. Visser, age 97, of Sioux Center, IA died Monday, July 6, 2020 at Royale Meadows Care Center in Sioux Center.
A private family funeral service will be held 10:30 a.m. Thursday, July 9, 2020, at the Memorial Funeral Home in Sioux Center with Rev. Carl Klompien officiating. The public is invited to the burial which will follow at Memory Gardens Cemetery in Sioux Center at 11:15 a.m.
Visitation with Peter’s children present will be from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., Wednesday, July 8th at Memorial Funeral Home of Sioux Center.
In lieu of flowers family wish memorials to be directed to Sioux Center Christian School or Western Christian High School.
Peter T. Visser was born October 24, 1922 in Sioux Center, IA, the son of Teunis and Elizabeth (Akkerhuis) Visser. He received most of his education in Sioux Center but as a family they moved to Havanna, ND where he graduated high school. Pete was involved with athletics in high school and enjoyed basketball, softball, and bowling. On November 18, 1946 he was united in marriage to Muriel Joyce Hogan at First Christian Reformed Church in Sioux Center. From 1946 to 1965 the couple farmed near Sioux Center and in 1965 they moved into town. From 1965 until 1995 Peter worked for Coop Gas and Oil in Sioux Center until his ‘retirement’. Not one to remain idle, Peter worked as custodian for the Sioux Center Community Center and at the Last Chance Depot.
Pete’s faith was very dear to him. He was active in his church his whole life. He served on the church consistory, taught Sunday school, and was involved with men’s society and the gleaner’s forum. He also served on the Sioux Center Christian School Board. Peter was a man of few words but lived a life of steady dedication to his Savior Jesus Christ.
He is survived by his wife of nearly 74 years, Muriel Visser of Sioux Center, IA; son, Stan (Sharon Tolsma) Visser of Rock Valley, IA; daughter, Ruth (Visser) Scot Pitcairin of Gilbert, AZ; son, Dean (Roxanne Lee) Visser of Chandler, AZ; daughter, Melissa (Visser) Cox of Sioux Center, IA; 11 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews and other extended family members.
Pete was preceded in death by his parents; infant son, Gregory; four brothers, William (Theresa) Visser, Gilbert (Caroline) Visser, Gerrit (Katherine) Visser and John J (Gertrude) Visser; one sister, Adrianna (George) Kots.
