William Gene “Bill” Heynen was born December 3, 1939, the son of Henry and Lenora (Vreeman) Heynen in Sioux Center, Iowa. He grew up on a farm near Carmel and attended a country school.
On April 8, 1960, Bill was united in marriage to Wilma Schoep at the Carmel Reformed Church. The couple made their home on a farm near Carmel and later near Sioux Center. The couple moved to Boyden, Iowa in 1977.
Bill was a faithful member of Bethel Christian Reformed Church and later the Hope Christian Reformed Church of Hull, where he served on the church council and as a Sunday School teacher.
Bill was a feed salesman at Sioux Feed Company and Purina before becoming the owner and operator of Quality Farm Supply. Bill always had a listening ear and would take time for a cup of coffee with customers and friends or a pop with his grandkids.
He especially enjoyed his Saturday morning visits with his grandkids over his homemade breakfast sandwiches. Along with working at Quality, he also kept busy on the farm, raising turkeys and pigs. Known for his cooking talents at the Gobblestop Turkey Shop and the Boyden Burger Barn, Bill cherished the fellowship and friendships that grew around good food and good company.
In his free time, he could often be found cruising the countryside with his lead foot, stopping at different towns for a cup of coffee, picking up grandkids to ride along, spending time on the boat at the lake, or attending musical events in the community—especially those of his grandkids. He was a member of the same card club for 50 years. Bill’s upbeat and positive spirit helped him form many meaningful friendships and relationships throughout the years.
Those left to cherish his memory are three sons and their wives: Veryl and Kandace (Kooiker) Heynen of Boyden, Bruce and Kim (Anema) Heynen of Boyden, Arlo and Connie (Vaandrager) Heynen of Sheldon, IA; daughter-in-law, Michelle (Vande Kamp) Heynen of Rock Valley, IA; 23 grandchildren; 49 great grandchildren; sisters, Virgina (Charles) Ward of Amarillo, TX; Valerie Hulleman of Harrisburg, SD; sisters-in-law, Shirley Addink of Inwood, IA and Joan VandeBerg of Luverne MN.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Wilma; his parents; parents-in-law; a son, Ryan Heynen; and brother-in-law, Harold Van De Berg; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Marv and Arta Schoep; brother-in-law, Daryl Addink.
