Wilma Jean De Jong was born on April 19, 1944, the daughter of Henry and Dena (De Bie) De Haan in Artesia, California. She grew up in California and graduated from Valley Christian High School before attending Dordt College in Sioux Center, Iowa. It was there that she met her beloved husband, Alfred B. De Jong. They were united in marriage on February 12, 1965, in Artesia, California.
The couple made their home on a farm northeast of Ireton, Iowa, where they raised their family. Together they were blessed with five children: Rhonda, David, Steve, Brenda, and Cheryl. Their son David passed away in infancy.
Wilma was a faithful member of the Ireton Christian Reformed Church, where she served as a Calvinette leader, youth group leader, Couples Club leader, and other roles. When Alfred and Wilma retired from farming in 2008, they moved to Sioux Center, Iowa, and became members of Bethel Christian Reformed Church. Wilma’s strong faith was evident to all who knew her. She especially enjoyed attending Mary’s Fellowship and spending time in her daily devotionals.
Wilma had a heart for hospitality and found great joy in caring for others. She loved traveling, baking, and opening her home to family and friends. Time spent together—whether around the table, celebrating milestones, or simply visiting—meant the world to her. Above all, Wilma cherished her family, and her warmth, kindness, and gentle spirit will be deeply missed.
Wilma is survived by her four children: Rhonda (Mark) Franken of Sioux Center, Iowa; Steve (Nancy) De Jong of Hingham, Wisconsin; Brenda (Aaron) Prins of Mabton, Washington; and Cheryl De Jong of Oak Forest, Illinois; nine grandchildren: Megan (Mick) Argo, Courtney (James) Hellinga, Katelyn (Alex) Blankespoor, Anneke (Shane) Van Essen, Case De Jong, Willem De Jong, Alex (Heidi) Prins, Austin (Kelsey) Prins, and Zoe Prins; eleven great-grandchildren: Bryson, Cohen, and Jaxon Argo; Hudson, Jase, Cora, and Camdyn Blankespoor; Dallas, Ford, and Quinn Hellinga; and Wesley Prins; siblings: Loren and Thressa Struiksma, Henry and Pattie De Haan, Larry De Haan, Howard Bomgaars, and Marion Groenendyk; along with many nieces, nephews, and extended family members.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Alfred B. De Jong; her son, David Lee De Jong; her parents, Henry and Bernadena (De Bie) De Haan; her parents-in-law, Theodore and Geraldine (Hofmeyer) De Jong; and her brothers- and sisters-in-law: Margaret De Haan, Arlene Dekkers, Thelma Bomgaars, Jeanette Groenendyk, and Anthony Dekkers.
