Wilmina Schuiteman was born October 6, 1930, to John and Helen (Kooiker) Kroese in Hull, Iowa, and was raised on a farm near Hull. She attended elementary school in Hull and graduated from Western Christian High School. Wilmina was musically talented and talked often about singing with her sisters in her younger years.
Following graduation, Wilmina worked for a contractor in Hull. On December 16, 1949, Wilmina was united in marriage to Melvin Schuiteman of Sioux Center, Iowa, where they made their home on the Schuiteman family farm two miles east of Sioux Center. Melvin and Wilmina were great working companions. Besides their livelihood of farming, they worked for a time as caterers for special meals and events. They also provided 40 years of cleaning services for several businesses in Sioux Center. Melvin and Wilmina were blessed to celebrate 68 precious years together on the family farm until Melvin’s death in September of 2018. Wilmina continued to live on the farm until she moved to Crown Pointe Care Center in July of 2023.
Wilmina not only farmed with Melvin, but was an excellent cook and gifted seamstress. She enjoyed sewing, embroidery and crocheting, making all of her daughters’ bridesmaid dresses along with beautiful doilies and afghans. Wilmina taught her daughters these skills and many other skills through their years of 4-H participation. She enjoyed working outside and took pleasure in keeping the farm looking neat. She spent hours working in her flower and vegetable gardens, canning her vegetable produce and harvesting apples each year.
Wilmina was a faithful member of First Reformed Church, now Centerpoint Church, in Sioux Center. Being a member of the Lydia Womens’ Circle was important to her in providing her Bible study and friendship. Together, Melvin and Wilmina took great joy in their 6 children, 22 grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren, 1 great-great-grandchild and all their spouses. Wilmina enjoyed the Sunday afternoon family gatherings at the farm and graciously hosted her family for dinner every-other week. She supported her family by attending many of their events and activities.
Wilmina’s children and their families are left to cherish her life.
